I just finished Greg McKeown’s book Essentialism. It is a must read.
I am blessed to work with exceptional leaders who are successful but struggle with doing too much; being all things to all people. They struggle to say no to requests in order to avoid conflict and not hurt other’s feelings. They feel they must do it all.
Sound familiar?
If you want to get off this rollercoaster, McKeown’s book can help. It is all about the pursuit of doing less, doing what is essential, what is important now and eliminating the rest. Sounds easy but it is not. You need to create new neuropathways with new behaviors and habits. It requires us to stop and ask ourselves, “am I spending my time and resources on the right things?”
Each day we are faced with multiple opportunities. It is impossible for us to invest our time and energy in all of them. Some may be relevant, but most are not important or essential. McKeown says, “essentialism means differentiating among the options and selecting just a few essential ones and eliminate the rest.”
If you want to do the right things versus doing all things, this book is for you.
Lead well.
