Many of you know I am a die-hard Chicago Cubs fan. I wept with glee in early November when the Cubs won the World Series. I have written about how the organization’s leaders have transformed the club into a consistent winner by focusing on a winning vision and building a culture of character and excellence from top to bottom. They call it: That’s Cub!
I recently finished Tom Verducci’s book, The Cubs Way. It provides some wonderful leadership lessons that I have not written about. I will be writing several posts over the weeks to come. Look for them.
Joe Maddon, the manager of the Cubs went through a great deal to get where he is today. He played and coached the game and learned how to manage it from a number of coaches, scouts, owners and mentors along the way. He was very observant, listened and asked good questions to those with whom who he worked. He was a voracious reader of books on coaching, leadership, along with the classics. From all of this, Maddon shaped his own management and leadership philosophy. Maddon is a learner and continues to adapt his style to new situations.
How much are you learning? Are you a leader that constantly improves your game and adapts your style to new situations based on what you are learning? What are you reading that can help you be a more effective leader? Leaders are on a journey of continuous improvement. They read, study, observe themselves, ask questions, and adapt.
Become a leader that embraces continuous self-improvement!
