My last message outlined the formula for success for Butler University, “humility, passion, unity, servant hood and thankfulness”. In the coming weeks I will discuss each independently and how each relates to leadership. Each value or trait is part of what I call the DNA of effective leadership. They are interdependent of each other and by using them together will create a more real person and effective leader that your team will flock too.
Butler did not win the game Monday night but they played with zeal and passion. Sure the kids wanted a National Championship for themselves, but they were playing for something larger than individual gratification. They were playing for each other (unity), their coach, university and their fans across America. They gave it their all….their minds, bodies and heart and soul to pursue the dream. CAPTIVATING!
Remember a time in your life when you were passionate about something or a cause you believed in? You put everything into it…your mind, body and heart. You believed in the possibilities of what could be! It gave you energy, focus and hopefully joy and happiness.
As a leader what are you passionate about? What are you pouring your mind, body, heart and soul into? It could be a spiritual calling, or becoming a better leader, spouse, parent, child, sibling, friend, teacher, or coach. It could be volunteering at a organization who’s mission you believe in (servant hood). What ever it is, just get going and pour yourself into it!
As leaders we need to openly demonstrate our passion in both our work and personal lives. Yes, you do need both. It will help you be a better person and leader. Think of the parallels of what you are passionate about at work and away from the office. Things will stand out for you as you compare the two. By doing so it will make you a better person and also those you surround your self with.
Stop and ask yourself today, “What am I passionate about?”
